Program types, providers, and incentive types
Maintain the Program Type, Provider, and Incentive Type lists your organization uses to categorize programs and incentives, from the Manage menu or inline while adding a program or incentive.
Before you start
- Programs is available to economic development organization (EDO) accounts. If your organization is set up as a site selector account, this page doesn't apply to you.
- Three short lists back the Programs module:
- Program Type — the category of a program, such as Grant or Tax Credit.
- Provider — the agency or body that funds or administers a program.
- Incentive Type — the kind of a single incentive underneath a program, such as Grant, Tax Credit, or Loan.
- A program's type and provider show on its card on the Programs page (the provider name is also matched by Search programs...), and each incentive shows its type as a badge on the program's page.
- Adding, renaming, and deleting entries in the Manage menu is limited to account admins. Any signed-in user on the account can create a new entry inline while filling out Add Program or the Add Incentive form, without opening the Manage menu.
Steps
Open the Manage menu
-
On the Programs page, click the gear button next to Add Program.
-
Choose Program Types, Providers, or Incentive Types from the Manage menu that opens.

Add an entry
-
In the Manage Program Types, Manage Providers, or Manage Incentive Types dialog, click Add Program Type, Add Provider, or Add Incentive Type (the label matches the list you opened).
-
Type a name and click Add.

Rename an entry
- Hover the entry and click the pencil icon.
- Edit the name and click the checkmark to save, or the × to cancel.
Entries marked System are shared defaults that every account gets. They have no pencil or trash icon and can't be renamed or deleted. When the list contains any, a Hide system defaults switch appears above it and is on to begin with, so switch it off to see them alongside your own entries.
Delete an entry
- Hover the entry and click the trash icon.
- A confirmation dialog shows how many programs or incentives currently use this entry. Click Delete to confirm.
An entry nothing uses is deleted right away. If the entry is still used by one or more programs or incentives, the delete is refused and an error message tells you how many reference it, even though the confirmation text says their type will be cleared. Change every program or incentive off that entry first, then delete it.
Create an entry while adding a program or incentive
- In the Add Program dialog, open the Program Type or Program Provider dropdown and choose Create new.
- Type a name and click Add. The new entry is created and selected on the program in one step.
- On a program's page, the Type list in the Add Incentive form ends with Add Incentive Type, which does the same for incentive types.
What happens next
- A new Program Type, Provider, or Incentive Type is available to every program or incentive on the account immediately, whether it was created from the Manage menu or inline while adding a program or incentive.
- Renaming an entry updates its name everywhere it's already used — every program or incentive showing that type or provider reflects the new name right away; nothing about the programs or incentives themselves changes.
- Deleting an entry only succeeds when nothing references it; a used entry stays until you reassign or remove every program or incentive using it.
Common questions
Q: Why can't I delete a provider? A: A provider (or program type, or incentive type) can't be deleted while one or more programs or incentives are still using it. The confirmation dialog tells you how many use it, and the delete is refused with an error message. Change those programs or incentives to a different provider first, then delete it.
Q: Do program types apply to all accounts or just mine? A: Some entries in the list are shared system defaults available to every account and can't be renamed or deleted. The rest are custom entries created by your account, and only your account sees them. The Hide system defaults switch above the list is on by default, so you see only your own entries until you switch it off.
Q: I renamed a type, do my existing programs update? A: Yes. Renaming a Program Type, Provider, or Incentive Type changes the name shown everywhere it already appears — badges, filters, and the incentive's Type field all pick up the new name immediately.
Q: Where do I see the gear button? A: It's on the Programs page, next to the Add Program button, and only appears for account admins. If you don't see it, you can still create program types, providers, and incentive types inline while filling out Add Program or the Add Incentive form.
